A portion of every school's funding is determined by the needs of its students. Extra funding is usually distributed to schools based on free/reduced meal applications but they are not required this year. For the 2021-2022 school year all students are eligible for FREE meals, so extra funding will be distributed differently. Please complete this Household Income Form to help us maximize our schools' funding!

WHY FILL OUT THE FORM?

- additional support staff for schools, like Instructional Aides, Intervention Support Providers, and after school tutors

COVID CASES IN WPUSD - UPDATE

Last week, Sept 27 - Oct 1, we had 17 cases of COVID.  We also had 2 assumed transmissions. The number of cases were definitely less than the previous week (48), which is great news. Our cases and assumed transmissions for this week, Oct 4 - 7 are 15 and 2 respectively. Normally we wouldn't have these all compiled yet, but with no school today we were able to get these out now. Although not as drastically, the numbers did go down again.

As a reminder, you can monitor our weekly COVID case counts (updated each Monday) on our website, HERE.

PLEASE KEEP YOUR CHILD HOME IF THEY ARE EXPERIENCING ANY COVID LIKE SYMPTOMS, EVEN IF YOU THINK IT'S ALLERGIES!!!

COVID TESTING - UPDATE (NOW AVAILABLE!!!)

The district will be providing no cost COVID testing for students, staff, and volunteers beginning next week (starting Monday, Oct. 11). Securing a reliable testing provider has been challenging, but we are happy to finally be able to provide this resource. These are nasal swab PCR lab tests with results in 48-72 hours. While we were hoping to be able to offer a saliva/mouth swab option, the lab we have partnered with does not provide that option at this time.

Our COVID testing schedule is as follows:

If you have any questions about testing, please contact Cliff De Graw, Assistant Superintendent of Personnel Services, at (916) 645-5293 or cdegraw@wpusd.org

2022-2023 VACCINE MANDATE FOR SCHOOLS - REMINDER

Governor Newsom announced on Friday, October 1 that the State is requiring all in-person students age 12 and up to be fully vaccinated, pending full FDA approval.

This mandate will also require all school employees to vaccinate against COVID-19, absent the option to test weekly.

What’s important to know is that this will not go into effect until the 2022-2023 school year, which allows us some time to address what's to come.

Many families expressed extreme concern about this new mandate via emails, phone calls, and comments at our recent Board meeting. I want to first say thank you to all who have reached out for your respectful tone in expressing your concerns and for your understanding that this mandate it not coming from WPUSD!!

The WPUSD Board of Trustees requested, during the Board meeting on Tuesday, October 5 that we draft a letter and approve a resolution to be sent to the Governor opposing the vaccine mandate for all and instead asking for choice.

We will continue to collaborate with our county health department and surrounding school districts and update you as new information develops.

TIKTOK CHALLENGES TARGETING SCHOOLS

In September, the Devious Lick TikTok Challenge emerged with students across the nation engaging in various levels of vandalism at their school campuses. WPUSD school sites have experienced the effects of this vandalism. The “Slap a Teacher” Challenge launched this month and encourages students to slap a teacher or staff member and run away, all while ensuring the action is caught on camera.

As a District, we will never condone acts of violence.  Any assault on District staff will carry significant consequences, which will result in home suspension, possible expulsion from the District and the active pursuit of criminal charges with law enforcement involvement. We ask that all parents and guardians talk to your student(s) about why engaging in these challenges is wrong, and discuss the consequences of participating in them.

More information about these challenges and the dangers associated with them may be found in this safety guide HERE and below.

For your reference, below is the list of monthly TikTok challenges:

September: Vandalize school bathrooms

October: Smack a staff member

November: Kiss your friend’s girlfriend at school

December: Deck the halls and show your b****

January: Jab a breast

February: Mess up school signs

March: Make a mess in the courtyard or cafeteria

April: “Grab some eggz” (another stealing challenge)

May: Ditch day

June: Flip off in the front office

July: Spray a neighbor’s fence

We appreciate your partnership as we continue to work to keep our community and schools safe and positive places for learning and personal growth.

The number of cases, again, was a rise from our previous week, but the assumed transmissions were down. It is our hope for this to be solidified very soon.  In the meantime, please continue to pursue testing (if needed) through your health care provider or other means.  Remember: we cannot accept results from at home COVID tests.

GOVERNOR ANNOUNCES NEW VACCINE MANDATE FOR SCHOOLS

Much like previous Friday information drops from the state level, another came today in real time by the Governor. In his morning press conference, Governor Newsom announced the state is requiring all in-person students age 12 and up to be fully vaccinated, pending full FDA approval (currently approved for those 16 and up).

Newsom went on to state that, in concert with the eligible student vaccination mandate, all school employees will also be required to vaccinate against COVID-19, absent the option to test weekly.

We are digesting this new information and will work to address the impact of this new mandate as it relates to WPUSD schools. In the meantime, what’s important to know is that this will not go into effect until 2022 (currently predicted as July 1, 2022 based on FDA projections for full approval).

We will continue to collaborate with our county health department and surrounding school districts and update you as new information develops.

MEET APRIL NITSOS, NEW BOARD MEMBER (AREA II - SHERIDAN)

April was appointed to the Western Placer Unified School District Board of Trustees on Tuesday, September 21, 2021  to represent Area II - Sheridan.  April and her family moved to Sheridan in 2019 and own JANGLES Family Farm where they grow mandarins and Christmas Trees.  April loves living in Sheridan and believes it is Placer County's best kept secret.

Currently, April works for Caltrans as a Supervising Transportation Engineer where she manages innovation, research, and data visualization teams.  She has worked for Caltrans for over 30 years.  April has also worked as a licensed real estate agent for Woods of California Real Estate Inc. for over 12 years.

In her spare time, April loves to bake - especially with her two daughters - or watch her two sons fish in their pond. She also enjoys riding motorcycles on their property.  Family is the most important part of April's life and she loves every minute of being a mom and wife (even the hard times).

April is honored to be able to serve our amazing community as a member of the WPUSD Board of Trustees.

Congratulations to April and a huge thank you to the other candidates that also interviewed for our Board vacancy.

COVID CASES IN WPUSD - UPDATE

Last week, Sept 6 - 10, we had 38 cases of COVID and many close contacts.  We also had 10 assumed transmissions. This is a rise from our previous week. Our cases and assumed transmissions for this week are still being compiled but, as a reminder, you can monitor our weekly COVID case counts (updated each Monday) on our website, HERE.

We are working hard to avoid outbreaks within our schools/district, which may require us, at times, to be more aggressive with our quarantines. We are working closely with PCPH to address cases and quarantines in an effort to keep our schools open.

COVID TESTING - UPDATE

As was shared yesterday, COVID-19 testing was supposed to have begun but, unfortunately, there were issues out of our control that caused a delay in getting started. At the last minute, the testing company notified us that there was an issue with the nurse staffing company and they would not be able to staff our testing sites as they had promised.

Until the testing company can secure the appropriate staffing to fully serve our testing sites, the district will be postponing onsite COVID-19 testing. It is our goal to offer a  reliable, consistent testing schedule for our families and staff.

We understand that this is a huge inconvenience for those who are counting on this resource, and we are working to resolve this issue as soon as possible.  We are also in communication with other vendors, etc. in hopes of getting this up and running ASAP.

In the meantime, please continue to do your best to seek testing elsewhere as needed. Remember, test results must come from a health care provider or an authorized location to administer a COVID test.  We cannot accept in-home test results.

TIKTOK ENCOURAGES SCHOOL THEFT AND VANDALISM

ALERT:  Social Media Platform, Tik Tok, Encourages School Theft and Vandalism

A viral TikTok challenge that is currently trending nationally encourages students to record themselves stealing and vandalizing school property, then posting results of their actions on social media.  The hashtag challenge #deviouslicks was removed from TikTok due to violation of guidelines, but the trend unfortunately continues with users changing the hashtag.  Urban dictionary defines “lick” as “a successful type of theft which results in an acceptable, impressive and rewarding payday for the protagonist”.  Followers of this trend are encouraged to post their deeds on social media to gain likes or followers.  The challenge resulted in at least one act of vandalism at one of our local schools this week. View a local news story regarding the trend at https://sacramento.cbslocal.com/2021/09/16/sacramento-region-tiktik-school-vandalism/

Unfortunately we have already had to suspend some WPUSD students for vandalizing our bathrooms.

We ask that you please discuss this trend with your child(ren) to encourage them to avoid the challenge, and to understand that not all ideas posed on social media are good ideas. In addition, please make sure they know that there are likely consequences of school discipline and law enforcement intervention if they participate in this challenge.
