Short Term Independent Study Attendance Instructions - Elementary/Middle School/High School
Requests for Short Term Independent Study must be made no less than five (5) school days prior
to the first day of a student’s absence. All requests submitted late may be subject to denial.
Purpose: a Short Term Independent Study agreement is to enable the student to keep current with learning for the duration of their time missed. It provides an opportunity to ensure that a student is able to maintain academic progress in their regular classes during a short-term absence due to emergencies, vacation or illness. The duration of Short Term Independent Study is for no more than 15 DAYS. If a student participates in multiple Short Term Independent Study contracts, there is a maximum of 15 days allowed per school year.* Short Term Independent Study is an OPTIONAL educational alternative.
Eligibility: A student requesting Short Term Independent Study should be in good academic standing, have satisfactory attendance, and (if applicable) have successfully completed work from previous participation in Short Term Independent Study.
*If a student on an IEP is going to be in Short Term Independent Study for more than 10 days, special education support will be provided. Please talk to the site administrator for further information.
Attendance Responsibility:
- Once Master Agreement for Short Term Independent Study is approved the student’s attendance will be reported as Travel Study Incomplete (TS INC) for the time period noted on the agreement.
- Student must also be tagged as Travel Study in Special Programs for contract period. Note: Enter the first day the student was not active in the program for the Exit Date. For instance, if the students end date for Short term Independent study is 9/20, the Exit date in the program should be 9/21.
- Teacher will submit the Assignment sheet for Short Term Independent Study (Elementary/Secondary) along with a sample of the work to the attendance clerk 3 work days after student returns.
- Please ensure the Assignment Sheet for Short Term Independent Study is signed by teacher and the office staff for audit purposes.
- A sample of the work should be attached to the assignment sheet. Secondary sites: It’s recommended to not limit the assignments to only one class. For example, have assignments for history, math and English; not just all math assignments.
- Attendance Clerk will adjust students attendance accordingly based on the work completed on the Assignment sheet for Short Term Independent Study and complete the days using the attendance code (TS COMP).
- Attendance will not be adjusted unless Assignment sheet and samples of the students work is provided.
